Tuesday 24th July – bike ***** Felixstowe to Levington – sunny and hot.

A bit of a disturbed night as Felixstowe Dock was very noisy and Pepsi the cat was scratching at our bedroom door at three in the morning we decided to get up fairly early, make a flask, take some cut up fruit and bike to Levington. We left at 6.45 spotted a baby Gold Finch on the phone cables in front of our house, then down to the lovely quiet prom, so much better without all the holiday crowds with not a cloud in the sky. You then have to go through the scary dock with its huge lorries thundering past to the four electric gates that control the crossing as the container trains leave the port. A diesel was shutting so we had to wait, Mag did use the phone to ask and they said it wouldn’t take long. We were soon through the heavy gates and biking up the hill at the back of the docks and the view point had actually been cleared so you could see it! Continuing down to Trimley Marshes only stopping to take our coats off and pump Mags tire up. We ignored the no cycling sign ( a bit unnecessary ) and biked along the sea wall as it offers better views of the River Orwell and the marshes. The tide was low and several waders were feeding in the river as the reserve lakes have all but dried up! Then its around dead tree lagoon to one of our favourite seats in Suffolk on the cliff looking up river just short of Levington Marina. Drink and snack time watching the cormorants flying off for a days fishing. On to Loompit lake, not many birds about and back along the tree lined paths taking us to Trimley and home. So a top 11 mile ride out for 2 hours 45 minutes and we saw next to no one :) We will have to get out early more often !!!
